The Magic of A Double Breasted Suit
Throughout time we’ve seen a number of suiting trends come & go, yet one has stood the test of time. The double breasted suit. Once seemingly reserved for the 50+ crowd, who worked ten hour days stuffed in an office, cubicle, or sitting about a boardroom, has since lost some of its distinction & that’s not necessarily a bad thing.
Double breasted suits are starting to see a resurgence in everyday, or fast-fashion, due to being the hottest looks consistently on red carpets, within the past five years. The average shopper feels far more confident purchasing what they can see, feel & try on in the privacy of a dressing room. The newfound accessibility of such a timeless fashion staple has since taken away the uppity stigma once attached to whomever wore it. Whereas it was once almost the eighth Deadly Sin to wear a double breasted suit with anything other than a proper dress shirt & tie, we’re now seeing far more ‘laxed variations of exactly how this suit can be worn. Dress shirt & ties aside, paired with a simple crewneck tee & dress shoes or sneakers, a double breasted suit can add the perfect level of class, flare & sophistication to your arsenal.
With an abundance of suiting options, some great, some poor, I’ve found that double breasted suits never fail me. If you know your correct suiting measurements, which you can get free of charge at almost any suit supplier or big box retail shop at your nearest mall, you’ll find less fitting frustrations with the added support of the extra button(s). The average double breasted suit comes with double button closures to six overall buttons. More than six buttons is…just please don’t. A classic suit can already be a major confidence booster, but most decently constructed double breasted suits fit like a warm hug. The overall construction is specifically made to accentuate the body’s best features, be it man or woman. Strong & sturdy in the shoulders, broad & firm chest area, tapered in the torso, a quick fit-then-flare at the waist, going into the hips & pants fitting however you’ve bought or tailored them. Honestly, we need more clothing that’s equally kind to men & womens’ physiques. In my personal experience double breasted suits fit far better with little to no tailoring. Plus it’s always fun to elevate them just a bit more by replacing the, often plastic, buttons with brass or horn.
At the end of the day a double breasted suit is an investment in a wearable piece of history that says “I value fashion & I respect classics, but I’ll also leave my mark in this world. I mean business.” Guys & girls, I promise you, if you’ve never owned a double breasted suit, invest in one & see if you don’t instantly feel cooler, more confident & sexier.
