Sheesh, so many components to address here…

Sonic, Himself

I’m not at all one to body-shame, but “BOOOOOOY IF YOU DON’T GET YO…”. Seriously though, what did Sonic do to deserve being built like 2007 Khloe Kardashian? The shapes & proportions for his stature seem a bit all over the place & just totally awkward looking, so much so that he’s slightly uncomfortable to look at. I’ve seen malnourished animals in better physical condition that have nowhere near the same workout regimen.

The Gear

At the 0:29sec mark our blue-haired buddy can be seen very clearly rocking a pair of red Puma trainers equally as underwhelming as the two different official Sonic-inspired colorways of the PUMA X SEGA RS0’s. With big-name brand ambassadors in the game like Big Sean & Jay-Z, just to name a couple, what a lame move to attach your brand to what looks to be a very meh film at best.

Jim Carrey

Just to be clear, Jim Carrey is a GOAT, but I hate seeing him in this position. While, it’s refreshing to see a comedy-god back on the big screen, in a mainstream film, it’s sad that it’s pretty much a character we’ve seen him play time & time again. It just seems like he’s grown so much spiritually, as a person & an entertainer, to go back to doing the same hollow roles that he by no means needs to portray anymore at this point in his career. He’s so much bigger than this role & honestly long time fans want to see something different from him, especially for a big-screen comeback.

Coolio’s “Gangsta’s Paradise”

Just why? I can’t speak for everyone, but this is not a song on my cardio playlist.

Saving Grace

What this film does appear to have possibly going for itself is the brilliant acting & comedic timing of the well-seasoned James Marsden & the upcoming Tika Sumpter. Both are shining stars in in their own rights with each role they take on. I like the balance of familiarity with making way for new talent to solidify themselves in film.

The action sequences also appear to be visually satisfying, which may make the film worth going to see in REAL-D 3D or IMAX 3D. Hopefully the nostalgia sales & new sales from kids who love anything animated & fun-spirited is enough to make this a box office success. Only time will tell, as the film opens in theaters this November.
